Greening the City Centre

  • Aaiotanga Community Space Aaiotanga Community Space (map)

Imagine a greener  central Auckland city center.

Picture balconies, rooftops, courtyards and alleyways buzzing with pollinators.

Growing herbs in a nearby community garden?

Do you know a space in the city that’s needing some attention to bloom?

Come explore the current urban gardening initiatives happening in our city and discover how you can participate.

Let’s beautify inner city Auckland together, one plant at a time.

Come along to meet with likeminded people – if your a beginner gardener or a many seasons expert you are welcome.

This event is a community-led initiative supported by: Aaiotanga Trust, Grey Lynn 2030, Waitematā Local Board and the Department of Internal Affairs.

Any koha received for this event will go towards the Papa Ngāhere community greening initiative. Papa Ngāhere (the forest floor) is a community-led project, developed in the city centre and funded through Aaiotanga Trust. It includes enabling residents to grow eco-sourced native plants on their balconies, roof-tops, courtyards and alleyways, to improve our pollinator pathways, support our birdlife and beautify our Vertical Neighbourhoods. This is an open project that welcomes contributions, guidance and support from other organisations and welcomes participation by all.

We seek to support Mana Whenua-led restoration strategies and take guidance from the Te Haumanu Taiao document and the Auckland Council Urban Ngāhere strategy.
