Traditional Japanese Stitching & Thimble making

  • Central City Library 46 Lorne Street Auckland, Auckland, 1010 New Zealand (map)

Discover the art of Sashiko, a traditional Japanese form of decorative stitching, in this hands-on workshop led by Cheryl Lyall, fibre artist and tutor. Taught in the traditional Unshin style passed on by Japanese tutor Junka, participants will first create their own Sashiko thimble, then learn how to use it to guide the needle in rhythmic, meditative stitching.

The class will explore the history and cultural roots of Sashiko as both a functional mending technique and a form of folk art, followed by a practical project: either a small Azuma bag or a visible-mending piece for a favourite garment.
